The late Brian McKenna, who was a paralyzed man, made life an adventure. Seems like an oxymoron, right? A paralyzed man living an adventurous life?
He said his life was a nonstop adventure and perhaps attributed to his positive outlook. “Try to make life fun because not having fun sucks,” he said.
Brian was a huge Saints fan. I myself am not a huge sports fanatic although I have enjoyed learning about football, loved playing volleyball, tennis, and badminton over the years. I also dabble in following boxing on and off over the decades. But that doesn’t matter, what matters is I just love the name Saints for a sports team. Not sure how the team acquired the name* but assuming after the song ‘When the saints go marching in’ after all they are in New Orleans.
(Side note I have been to Orleans, France. Comment if you have ever thought about how so many names with ‘new’ really got their names from something old.)
Well, that’s how this sports team did get their name – from an old spiritual and honestly, it doesn’t really matter.
What does matter is the reminder for us that we are saints therefore we should live like one!
I believe that is how Brian was trying to live out life full of life!
Before he was wheelchair bound, he made a cut out of his friend Jackson Smith while he was deployed. He took that cutout with him to Madi Gras and made an album of all the pictures he collected including the last being with the famed Saints Super Bowl superstar quarterback Drew Brees.
Several years later it was Jackson’s turn to have a pic with Brees and Brian’s cutout. It seemed the only fitting gift to give his recovering, now wheelchair bound friend.
It got me thinking, how are we easing the burden of another? How are we making life fun? What is it we can do to live a more saintly existence?
We each need to answer these questions on our own but I think Brian McKenna would say go find your adventure and his friend Jackson and quarterback Drew Brees might even agree for look at the adventure that came about for these 3 men to get acquainted all because of 2 life size photo cutouts.
Ask yourself: How can I live bigger?
Love your life as a full size cutout of who God has made you and desires you to be – a saint full of joy and abandonment.
Seize each day with gusto!
For if a man who no longer can care for the basic needs by himself can, don’t you think we in able bodies should do the same?
I sure do and all the while let’s strive to please our Saviour.
“If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.”
Romans 14:8 NIV
*the saints name is indeed from the spiritual.
Another little known fact is that the franchise was founded on November 1, 1966 which is of course is All Saints Day. Coincidence? I think not.
The Saints may not have made it to this year’s Super Bowl, but the next time you see them play, be reminded of how you are to live your life.
